Duration: 10 nights
Day 1 Fly to Calgary: Proceed to your hotel.
Day 2 Calgary: Calgary’s got small-town heart and big-city diversions. Between street festivals, nightlife and all the things to do outside, the work-hard, play-hard approach is in this city’s veins. Pedal the city’s 800 kilometres of paved pathways. The path winds past public art and through protected parks and riverside retail neighbourhoods. There are enough beer halls, cocktail bars, top-notch restaurants and casual dining options to keep you for fed and watered without repeats for a long, long time.
Day 3 Drumheller: Pick up your car to begin your self-drive tour.
If you see the world’s largest dinosaur, you’re in the right place. The towering replica – 4.5 times the size of a real T-rex – marks the visitor information centre in Drumheller. From there, you can plot your next adventure. The Royal Tyrrell Museum will have you nerding out in no time. It’s home to some of the most remarkable prehistoric specimens ever unearthed. That includes an armoured nodasaur that is so amazingly well preserved that it looks more like a statue than a fossil.
Day 4 Medicine Hat: Medicine Hat is the sunniest city in Canada, and that applies to its small-town heart, too. Truly. Its summer festivals and urban parks make it a place to stay or to plan your adventures around southeastern Alberta. The bizarre sandstone formations of nearby Red Rock Coulee Natural Area will make you feel like you’re on a Star Wars set.
Days 5-6 Waterton Lakes National Park: Nestled in the far southwest corner of Alberta, Waterton is one of the most distinctive mountain parks on the planet. Hiking here is legendary. Experience breathtaking views of these Rocky Mountains and clear blue waters on any number of trails.
Day 7 Radium Hot Springs: Only 1.5 hours West of Banff National Park is the friendly village of Radium Hot Springs. A vintage appeal to those seeking freedom to explore and accessibility to beautiful places, here you will find unlimited peaceful encounters with the mountain landscape. In every direction – lakes, rivers and wetlands fill the valley bottom, creating a diverse and rich landscape for wildlife and tranquil adventures on the water.
Days 8-10 Banff: Make today a day of discovery in Canada’s most famous Rocky Mountain community! The exclusive shops and restaurants that line Banff Avenue bring the tastes and goods of the world to your fingertips. Elk stroll along the wide central boulevards, creating a surreal mix of human and wildlife habitation. Perhaps arrange a visit to Banff Natural History Museum or gondola ride. Or for the more adventurous, try river rafting or a sidecar tour (activities and tours at additional cost). Overnight in Banff.
Day 11 Banff: Today you descend from the mountains back through the foothills en route to Calgary International Airport in time for your return flight.
