Alberta Winter Wonders Self-drive Tour

Duration: 12 nights

Day 1 Fly to Edmonton: On arrival collect your car and proceed to your hotel.

Day 2 Edmonton: At leisure. Edmonton embraces winter so there are no shortage of things to see and do. Perhaps head out to Elk Island National Park, as elk and bison viewing is at its best during the winter months. There are numerous city venues where outdoor skating is available with other winter pursuits also available just outside the city. When you want to escape the crisp cold air, visit the Royal Alberta Museum or enjoy some retail therapy at West Edmonton Mall.

Day 3 Edmonton/Jasper: Leave the city behind as you head west towards the Rockies and the easy-going alpine town of Jasper (226 miles).

Days 4-5 Jasper: At leisure. If you like the idea of some outdoor winter fun, there are no end of sporting options and excursions to fill your time, all with a backdrop of jawdropping mountain views. Wildlife is still very active so you may spot deer, elk and moose in the park and after dark, turn your eyes skyward for some stargazing.

Day 6 Jasper/Lake Louise: Set off for one of the most beautiful journeys on the planet as you travel along the Icefields Parkway. Winding along the Continental Divide the drive takes you through soaring rocky mountain peaks, icefields and vast sweeping valleys. (144 miles).

Day 7 Lake Louise: Rent a pair of skates and glide along Lake Louise itself, one of the world’s most scenic outdoor rinks (usually from the first week in December). There’s nothing more magical than skating across the ice with the magnificent backdrop of the Victoria Glacier. Numerous other activities are available including sleigh rides, snowshoeing, skiing and dog sledding. Later, treat yourself to a steaming cup of hot chocolate and enjoy the incredible wintery views.

Day 8 Lake Louise/Banff: Perhaps take an optional ride on the Lake Louise Gondola, which offers beautiful scenic views across the Bow Valley on a clear day. Later, depart for the charming town of Banff (36 miles).

Days 9-10 Banff: Take time to stroll through the downtown streets of Banff and check out the many unique stores or stop in one of the cafes or restaurants for a bite to eat. There are also a selection of museums to visit or you could treat yourself to a spa treatment at the Banff Springs Hotel. Once again, there are lots and lots of outdoor sporting pursuits to enjoy and fabulous scenery to soak up. Talking of soaking, why not head to Banff Upper Hot Springs for a rejuvenating dip in the warm waters.

Day 11 Banff/Calgary: Follow the Trans-Canada Highway to the welcoming city of Calgary, a city that has small-town heart and big-city diversions (80 miles).

Day 12 Calgary: Visit the Calgary Tower in the heart of the city for wonderful 360 degree views. If you’ve not already had your fill of activities, perhaps hire a fat bike and explore some of Calgary’s extensive urban bikeways.

Day 13 Calgary: Return your car at the airport where your tour concludes.
